Tourism is the world’s fastest growing industry. Traveling to far flung places gives us a wonderful opportunity to experience cultures that are so different from our own. But with the wondrous joy of travel comes the responsibility of ensuring that we do not adversely affect those countries that we visit. In a nutshell, Responsible Travel is about ensuring that you, as travelers, and Fiore Adventure, as a promoter of travel:

    • respect the local culture
    • do not inadvertently introduce new social ills and
    • promote & practice environmental responsibility in the places that we visit

It has always been at the heart of Fiore Adventure’ ethos to not exploit local communities’ culture and environment.

    What you can do:

    • Learn something about Croatia: culture, religion, geography, politics and local customs.I strongly recommend to get a good travel guide such as Lonely Planet guides or Croatian Tourism Board. They are very useful before and during your staying.
    • Try to speak at least a few words of Croatian, you will make a big impression by doing it and it’s also a show of respect and interest on your part.
    • In many places fresh water is a very precious commodity and should not be wasted, so use a minimum for showering and washing, especially when you are on islands, tap water is drinkable throughout Croatia
    • Turn out the lights or air condition when you leave your room, use the public transport as much as you can, minimize your waste generally
    • Pick up your litter, never live any trace in nature, when you are in rural areas please stay to the trails and don’t damage or take any plants or flowers

    Packing list – adventure travel
One word: versatility. Your destination and the duration of time you’re traveling generally dictates what—and how much—to bring along. But whether you’re living out of your bag for two weeks or four months, pack clothes that can do double duty, ones that are functional enough for the trail but sharp enough not to stand out in a city. Sun hats can become rain hats, backpacks with detachable daypacks free your hands when lugging your gear from bus stop to hotel, and a good pair of travel pants with a concealed zipper pocket could stand in for a money belt.

When it comes to clothing, stay away from cotton (or at least aim for poly/cotton blends; it may be comfortable, but it takes forever to dry), and try for wrinkle-free clothes. Pack one nice outfit for that must-have dinner in a Parisian café, and always have pants or a skirt that’s long enough to cover your legs should you be traveling in a country where custom dictates a degree of modesty. In warmer climes, you’ll naturally be packing lighter. In cooler locales, layering will stretch your wardrobe. Another piece of advice: darker colors generally blend in anywhere, let you mix and match without becoming a fashion accident, and save the hassle of constant washing. And if you’re heading someplace with inexpensive markets and shopping (Southeast Asia, for example), you can always buy a few new items when the need or desire strikes.

In the brave new world of bags, you can get a rolling bag/backpack hybrid that gives you the versatility, and the newer generation of rollers come with wheels that swallow up Central European cobblestone as much as NYC asphalt. But if you’re uncertain, let your interest be your guide. Trekking in Annapurna? Go with a traditional backpack. Crawling the pavement of South America’s metropolises? A rolling bag will save your back and serve you well.

Fiore Tours organized all the details of a custom self-guided tour for a group of friends from a Seattle WA outdoor club to day hike and visit historic sites all along the length of Croatia. Their driver was excellent; the van and ferries and all the bookings were very good; and their office person Sasa did an incredible job ironing out the inevitable issues with a couple of the hotels. Dalibor (owner) took the time to drive to Motovun and meet with me in person to go over the entire itinerary and arrangements with me. I am so impressed with Fiore and would recommend them to others without hesitation.

A wonderful combination of walking through stunning scenery – one day quite tough as we were high up and it rained but the rest moderate – and visiting beautiful towns and villages, and eating fabulous food. Highly recommended! Far less touristy than other parts of Croatia. Everyone extremely friendly. And food and wine to die for – I never knew Croatia had such good wine! We also did an olive oil tasting, ate more truffles than ever before, and enjoyed superb restaurants every night. The first 2 nights in Kaldanija we ate in our hotel restaurant where the owner is also a very talented chef and a great fun character which was a real experience, and after that we ate in restaurants in the towns we were staying, sometimes at the hotel, sometimes not. All superb.

The booking process was smooth and easy, all questions answered quickly and professionally. Any special requests (extra transfers, reversing direction of one walk, extra night, hotels) were made possible, so that the entire week perfectly fit our preferences.App, info meeting, route notes… Everything was clear and the directions: I think you couldn’t have gone wrong if you tried. Everyone we met was extremely friendly, drivers always perfectly on time. Except for the last day of hiking when the transfer seemed to have been outsourced to a local taxi company, and the size of the car didn’t match the number of hikers that day. He had to make two trips and we had to wait for almost an hour, but even then the driver was very friendly and apologetic and kept us updated via reception.Hotels (San Rocco, Villa Borgo, Vela Vrata and Eugenia) were all good, with particularly good food in San Rocco and Vela Vrata, particularly nice rooms in San Rocco and Eugenia, and a fabulous terrace in Villa Borgo.Only the hikes stayed slightly below expectations, which of course isn’t Fiore’s fault at all. Just be aware that if you hike in autumn, the views will be restricted by dense foliage and the river between Buzet and Hum (apparently the highlight of the walk during other times of the year) will have all but dried up.The villages, food, wine, people, organisation… everything was wonderful. We enjoyed even day rainy days! Thank you so much everyone who made it possible!.

We understand Mateo is quite new to your company but would like to tell you how professional, friendly, helpful and informative he was. When we arrived back in Pula we had some problems getting access to our accommodation and Mateo stayed with us until it was sorted. His English is extremely good which we also appreciated. We would consider him an asset to any company working in Tourism and hope he has an excellent future in your company.I would also like to add that the whole experience worked really well. The choice of hotels, itinerary and the combination of maps/ instructions and the app for way finding were all fabulous! I think my friend provided feedback but would like to confirm directly how much we enjoyed our trip and that we would also recommend Fiore to arrange self guided trips in CroatiaThank you very much for a wonderful holiday experience.

Three friends walked the Green Instria walking tour from Buje to Lovran and loved it. Having done several long walks over the years I can say that Fiore is one of the best companies to work with. Sasa our point of contact provided impeccable customer support both getting ready for the trip and during our walk. He helped arrange transportation after the walk and a reservation in a restaurant for our first night. All the drivers, Mateo (who provided our initial brieging), Peter, Dean and Eddie were great. The accommodations were all lovely. The GPS was simple and worked well. The written instructions were a nice supplement but because of the nature of the walk would have been hard to follow without the GPS. Definitely recommend Fiore..

Excellent hotels, the guide app was a fantastic help and all our pickups were on time. Our local guides were very helpful with tips about local restaurants. Sometimes we thought they were a bit optimistic about the walking times though! The only thing I would suggest is some shorter options for hot days – we found the walks to Buzet and Motuvun very long in such warm weather. We would also suggest that walkers wanting only a one way walk to Hum should be advised to start at Hum and use the walk along the river.

The team had great walk co-ordinates – picked us up each morning dead on the dot, answered questions happily & best of all their route notes were excellent. Nice balanced walk too – had a day loop walk in the middle you could avoid if needing a break, plus two nights at two hotels so not always packing & unpacking. A manageable walk through gorgeous countryside even for our ageing bodies!

The hilltowns are delightful and the people who transport to trails are especially skilled and kind. They are, though, prepared to transport and guide mountain bikers not walkers. This trail includes wonderful walks to and from hilltowns and one day on an old railroad trail. The other days include climbing a wet, rocky trail using cables to keep from plunging deep into a ravine. Another difficult day had us walking 4 miles down a very steep road to a wonderful seaside town. Too many times, the trail marker was missing or hidden. Once the hunters tower had collapsed and wasn’t visible without exploring a large area. This trail should be re-rated or re-organized.

We felt like we have stumbled across something wonderful before the rest of the world had heard about it. The local tour guys were outstanding and one one rainy day they called us proactively to ask if they could come and pick us up to save us getting wet – the sort of customer service you rarely get these days and they were on time every time without fail. Good food and felt very reasonable. The only slight downside was getting caught in a massive thunder and hail storm coming down a steep mountain – a bit scary but even then the local guys offered to come and pick us up if we needed them.

Changes to our itinerary were simple, for example. Due to the heat in August it was more convenient to start early when things were a bit cooler. A request to the local agent was simple and they were more than accommodating. The distance of each walk is doable providing you pace yourselves, after all, you’re on holiday! As first timers to Croatia what we had not anticipated was the heat. Factor 50 suncream & hats were the order of each day and if you are prone to heat rash then expect to get it.Accommodation throughout was very good but it might be worth looking/asking for hotels that all have proper air con because in the summer months it is virtually essential, not all of them had it.Top prize goes to our first hotel, Guesthouse Lovac. Not because of its situation which is remote and by the side of a road but because of the relaxed and very friendly atmosphere created by owner Helen and her husband. Not once did we see a menu. Each morning it was more of a chat as to what we might like for dinner, fish, meat, bear stew, with lots of ingredients grown or reared by Helen herself. If the going does get a little tough then a simple call to your hotel or Fiore Tours will soon see a taxi arriving to take you on to your destination. The route guide is provided by Fiore Tours and consists of maps and a photographic & written route. If you follow carefully and are observant then you can’t go wrong. As a back up we took a hand held GPS which did prove invaluable on one or two occasions. All in all a lovely holiday in a quiet rural part of Croatia (Istria).

(Not to mention copious bottles of local wine!) The walks were well marked and the accompanying booklet, complete with photographs, was spot on. We just completed a delightful trek across the Istrian Pennisula in Croatia. From a logistical perspective, it was well organized, there were no problems with the accommodations or morning pickups and luggage transfers. We trekked in early October and found the weather ideal for walking. It would be hard to imagine doing this trek in the summer due to the hot temperatures. On the first day of our trek, we were given our Road Book and maps. The road book is a trail guide describing the daily routes complete with pictures highlighting important trail junctions etc. On some of the walks we found the descriptions and pictures to be a bit confusing as the pictures were taken at different times of the year and some trails were a bit overgrown. However, we never felt lost or concerned even when we knew we were off the trail. We had downloaded the MACS App which includes a GPS tracker and highlighted trail. So, with the 3 tools (road book, map and GPC tracker) finding our way to our destination was very doable. We highly recommend downloading the MACS App!Each accommodation offered a different experience but all were very nice. If you start your trek in Brtonigla and stay at the LOVAC hotel, be sure to treat yourself to a bottle of champagne and have Mauris, the most gracious host, to open it for you using his sword! It’s quite the show and great way to start the vacation. We found the Croatian people to be very welcoming and charming. As an added treat, we managed to be in Istria during the very short WHITE truffle season. There were many olive groves and vineyards. The olive oils and wines were terrific.

“12-day Coast to Coast Walking Tour Across Istria” Our group of 9 retirees has done England’s Coast to Coast and Offa’s Dyke paths. We decided to try someplace different this year and happened on Fiore’s walking tours of Istria. Dalibor Rudan (a traveler’s gem if ever there was one) patiently listened to all our wants and answered all our questions, responding with amazing speed each time. He then organized a custom self-guided walking trip for us across the Istrian peninsula (“coast to coast”). Our experience with Fiore echoes those of the other reviewers (great accommodations; good walking advice, maps and instructions; and truly attentive follow-up each step of the way). We were met several times en route by Dalibor or Ilija (another gem). Fiore also organized for us a week-long (post-walk) sightseeing tour of the Dalmatian coast, equally splendid. We can’t recommend them too highly. Tripadvisor

He explained where we might get caught on the directions and offered alternatives if we needed them. The towns of Motovun, Buzet, and Hum were delightful hilltop towns each with their own character. finishing at Lovran was superb with the promenade walk the next day a must. Accommodation at each stopover was excellent however La Paranzana was a cut above the rest. The most spectacular walk was the last up to Mt Vojak, a bit cloudy but worth the climb.
