Packing list – adventure travel
One word: versatility. Your destination and the duration of time you’re traveling generally dictates what—and how much—to bring along. But whether you’re living out of your bag for two weeks or four months, pack clothes that can do double duty, ones that are functional enough for the trail but sharp enough not to stand out in a city. Sun hats can become rain hats, backpacks with detachable daypacks free your hands when lugging your gear from bus stop to hotel, and a good pair of travel pants with a concealed zipper pocket could stand in for a money belt.
When it comes to clothing, stay away from cotton (or at least aim for poly/cotton blends; it may be comfortable, but it takes forever to dry), and try for wrinkle-free clothes. Pack one nice outfit for that must-have dinner in a Parisian café, and always have pants or a skirt that’s long enough to cover your legs should you be traveling in a country where custom dictates a degree of modesty. In warmer climes, you’ll naturally be packing lighter. In cooler locales, layering will stretch your wardrobe. Another piece of advice: darker colors generally blend in anywhere, let you mix and match without becoming a fashion accident, and save the hassle of constant washing. And if you’re heading someplace with inexpensive markets and shopping (Southeast Asia, for example), you can always buy a few new items when the need or desire strikes.
In the brave new world of bags, you can get a rolling bag/backpack hybrid that gives you the versatility, and the newer generation of rollers come with wheels that swallow up Central European cobblestone as much as NYC asphalt. But if you’re uncertain, let your interest be your guide. Trekking in Annapurna? Go with a traditional backpack. Crawling the pavement of South America’s metropolises? A rolling bag will save your back and serve you well.

3. DAY – ISLAND OF LOPUD
After breakfast you will have a transfer to Gruz port to catch a boat across to Lopud Island, a crossing of just under an hour. Nowadays Lopud is a charming and relatively quiet place with good beaches and without cars or traffic, home to a permanent population of under 300 people. In the past however, Lopud was a very important port, with great strategic importance – in the 17th century it is said to have had a population of 14,000 people, mostly involved in seafaring. Formally part of the Republic of Dubrovnik, from the 18th to the early 20th centuries, the French, English and Austrians took turns controlling this strategically located little island. Nowadays there are reminders of the island’s more momentous maritime past with the atmospheric ruins of a fortress and palace, churches dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries and a restored Franciscan monastery. You will have the day to walk around the island and enjoy its beaches before returning to Dubrovnik in the afternoon.
Accommodation: Guesthouse or Hotel 3* in Dubrovnik
Meals: Breakfast
4. DAY – ISLAND OF ŠIPAN, walking distance up 14 km
We set out from the main port of Dubrovnik to the Sipan island by the local boat, largest of the famous Elafiti islands. It has two little settlements – Luka Sipanska and Sudjuradj, both ancient and with a great character. Sipan is an island with a rich cultural heritage and is characterized by a rich mediterranean vegetation – vineyards, olive trees and pine forests are just perfect for walking. Start walking from Sudjuradj and head inland through the island all the way up to the other settlement Luka Šipanska. There are many possibilities to walk and to explore this island, it is almost a no car zone due to fisherman’s tradition. In history Sipan was a residential zone of Dubrovnik patricians, so if you follow the road from port Sudjuradj along the vineyards and olive trees to (western part of the island) port Luka you will find many interesting sights: old churches, summer residential palaces, beautiful pine forests and hidden bays. Upon arrival to port Luka you can have lunch in an excellent small tavern. Late afternoon return to the port of Sudjradj where the boat departs towards Dubrovnik.
Accommodation: Guesthouse or Hotel 3* in Dubrovnik
Meals: Breakfast
5. DAY – THE ISLAND OF MLJET
Mljet, often called as “the green island” because of its lush vegetation is a pearl of the Adriatic and one of the eight croatian National Parks. Same as Sipan it is overgrown with beautiful Mediterranean vegetation with clear blue sea, numerous bays, beaches and cliffs; but also two lovely salt lakes that are warm even early in the year.
Our day starts with a bus transfer to the port of Dubrovnik, from where we take a boat to Polače on Mljet. Our walking begins on arrival in the Polace village next to ancient remains of a Roman palace dating from the 2nd century and continues through the National Park and around the salt lakes. The walk lasts approximately 3-4 hours so you have a chance to swim and enjoy a lunch in local tavern before your return to Polace.
Accommodation: Guesthouse in Polace, island of Mljet
Meals: Breakfast
6. DAY– THE ISLAND OF MLJET
